Signing Out Non-SMU Items, Or Items to Non-SMU Patrons
In the event that a patron from another Novanet library is unable to borrow a SMU book, or a SMU patron is unable to borrow a Novanet book ordered, check their 'Local Privileges' to make sure there is permission to borrow from another library. Any patron with a valid ID (with the exception of CAUL, CURBA, and IB patrons) can borrow from any Novanet library, but permission must first be given in ALEPH.
To check the patron's privileges:
To check the patron's privileges:
- Open the Patron tab (F7).
- Under 'Patron Registration', click on 'Local Patron Information'. This will bring up a list of Novanet libraries on the upper panel on the right.
- Select the item's owning library.
- Click on the arrow beside 'Patron Status' in the bottom pane to open that menu.
- Double-click on the status appropriate for the patron (Undergraduate, Novanet Graduate, Faculty-Other, etc.). For more information on assigning status, click here.
- Click the 'Get Defaults' button. This will activate the privileges for that patron according to the owning library's borrowing practices.
- Click 'Update'. The patron now has permission to borrow books from that library.
- Go back to the check-out tab and check out the item as usual.
NOTE: Make sure that the due dates reflect the actual loan period. Once all the items for a patron have been signed out, always advise him of the due dates.
NOTE: Do not click the 'Override' button, as that does not give the patron borrowing privileges, and they will not be able to renew the item online. If you scan a book for check-out and receive the message, "No loan permission - Local Patron sublibrary NOV50", click the 'Cancel' button and repeat the steps as outlined above. Be sure to click the 'Get Defaults' and 'Update' buttons.
