CLOSING THE LIBRARY
60 MINUTES BEFORE CLOSING
- All available staff should return to the Circulation Desk to assist with Closing Procedures.
- Empty the outside book drop and check in any items.
- Check in any items returned to the inside book drop.
- Make up book trucks, if needed.
- Check and fill paper in all photocopiers, printers, and the fax machine.
- Record statistics of faxes sent and received, and file the fax forms.
- Arrange books in the Metro Book Truck bins neatly, placing all packages together in one bin.
- Clean up any guest print jobs that have not been claimed throughout the day.
- Shut down the computer and lock the ID room.
20 MINUTES BEFORE CLOSING
- All available staff should return to the Circulation Desk to assist with Closing Procedures.
- One or two staff members do rounds on all three floors to let patrons know we are closing.
- Advise patrons at the guest computers to finish their print jobs and retrieve them from the Circulation Desk.
- Do a final round of pickups in the lobby and photocopier area; reshelve items after recording numbers on the stacks sheet.
- Bring journal pickups from the 2nd and 3rd floor carts to the Circulation Desk. Bring any journals with green dots to the wire basket in Acquisitions.
- Check that all laptops are turned off and plugged in for recharging.
- Verify that all laptops have been returned and checked in.
- Tidy desk area; forward any books, notes, messages, etc. to the appropriate staff member.
10 MINUTES BEFORE CLOSING
- The staff member at the desk prepares for closing the cash, while the backup remains to serve patrons and complete remaining tasks.
ON THE HOUR
- Security personnel will arrive and begin checking the entire library to make sure all patrons have left.
- The staff member at the desk proceeds with closing the cash.
- Lost and Found items are recorded and stored.
- Security will advise desk staff when they have completed their rounds, and the library is secure.
- The backup staff member will record the traffic count (the "P" number) and disarm the security gate, and close and lock the entrance gate.
- Restart all of the Circulation Desk computers.
- The backup staff member will lock the laptop cupboard and the Lost and Found valuable drawer.
- Ensure the library fireplace is turned off.
- Ensure all keys are returned to their designated spots.
- Secure the cash, cash register keys, and associated material in the safe.
- Do a final check of the desk to see that everything is secure and tidy, before leaving the building.
