Telephone Etiquette
A large part of our work in the Library involves telephone conversations with patrons and members of the University community. We must always identify the Library when we answer the phone: "Good morning/afternoon/evening, Patrick Power Library" or an appropriate variation is required. We never answer the phone with a simple "Hello".
With the exception of Student Assistants, everyone who works in the Library has a personal phone number. If a call comes in for a staff member, please transfer the call to the appropriate extension. A University Directory and a Library Telephone list is located near each phone at the public desks. If you are required to take a message, please include the following information:

- The caller's name
- The caller's telephone number
- The time of the call
Transferring a Telephone Call
If you need to transfer a call, be sure to give the caller the phone number you are connecting them with. If the transfer is not successful and the connection is lost, the caller is able to call the direct line.

To transfer a call:
- Tell the caller you are transferring the call, and give them the direct phone number.
- Press the 'transfer' button located on the right side of the telephone.
- Dial the four digit extension of the person you are trying to reach.
- When the third party answers, tell them you are transferring a call and press the 'transfer' button once again and hang up.
- If you get the third party's voicemail, simply press the 'transfer' button and hang up (the caller will not be able to hear you over the recorded message).
