GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT ASSISTANTS
When a Student Assistant is first hired, the department's and the Library's expectations are explained. It is important that all staff understand that we enforce these standards not because we like rules or control, but because the quality of our services depends on how well we do our jobs.
If we are clear about our expectations, we anticipate few unhappy discussions. If you have any questions or concerns about our standards, please bring them to a supervisor.
You will be given a copy of the Student Assistant Checklist, which is a list of everything we think you should know to work effectively in the department. The Checklist will be used as a guide during your training and is a useful tool throughout your career with the Patrick Power Library. It is usually kept on the shelf below the Big Red Binder, or in your mailbox in the office.
THE GUIDELINES
1. Be on time for your shift. You should be ready to work at the designated time, not walking in the door.
2. Discuss your shift with your supervisor. Clearly communicate what you will be doing when not on the desk. This includes shelving duties and breaks.
3. Do not bring personal belongings, food, or drinks to the desk. That includes cell phones, book bags, and homework; you are allowed to have water in a covered container at the desk, but no other food or drink is permitted.
4. Encourage your friends and classmates to visit outside of work hours. It is very cool to work at the library, but the circulation desk is not for hanging out. Personal phone calls should also not be made from the Circulation Desk.
5. Please turn off your cell phone during work along with any personal music devices. Neither are allowed at the desk or in the stacks.
6. Do your best to get all your work done during your shift. It takes strong time management skills, so talk to your supervisor if you are having difficulty completing your assigned duties.
7. Sign your hours into the Big Red Binder every shift. Please write as clearly as possible and keep the dates in order.
8. Check your mailbox. Everyone who works in Access Services has a mailbox, located in the Circulation office.
