POWER OUTAGE
Be familiar with where our flashlights are kept at the desks.
The Library is equipped with a back-up power source, so if the power goes out, the generator should kick in. You can tell we are on generator power when the emergency lights are on. If we are on emergency power, there is full power on the first floor and emergency lighting on the second and third floors.
From dusk onwards, we expect students to stay on the first floor only. Students sitting in the dark should be asked to relocate. During the daylight hours, students may continue their work, pending a possible closure.
If we lose power and the generator does not kick in:

If we lose power and the generator does not kick in:
- Call Security and station a staff member at the door to let people out.
- No one is allowed into the building.
- Those few students who have left their personal effects in the building may be allowed in to collect their stuff.
- Anyone who has Library material should leave it at the Circulation desk. It will be placed on the 24-hour hold shelf. We will not expect staff to fill out forms by flashlight.
- Take the flashlight first to the Group Study Rooms and the Library classroom; this area is the darkest public space and patrons should be escorted out of this area first.
- All staff should be especially aware of the needs/requirements of students with disabilities who may be having difficulty moving from floor to floor.
- The security alarm at the entrance/exit will not function during an outage, however students do not have to hear that from you. We will have to operate on trust as students leave. Please do not attempt to search students' bags.
- Be aware of your own safety. Staff may wish to check rooms or floors in pairs.
- If the outage is longer than 20 minutes on the evening or weekend shifts, contact Sue at home for a decision on whether the Library should be closed.
