GETTIN' TO WORK (OR NOT)
1. What do I do when I have an important exam or assignment, and I need the day off to study?
First, try and find someone to either fill your shift or who might trade a shift with you. All student assistants are given contact information for their coworkers: send out an email to everyone with the details of your shift and if you want to give it up or trade it. This is usually enough.
If this doesn't work, talk to a supervisor. Sometimes shifts can be wiggled around and our skilled scheduler may be able to find a solution. However, please remember that giving an appropriate amount of notice makes a big difference - it's much more likely that you will find someone to cover your shift if you put it out there ahead of time, and our scheduler always appreciates a bit of time to figure out appropriate coverage.

2. What do I do if I wake up sick and can't come to work?
If you can't make it to work on short notice, it's important to call the Library right away and let a supervisor know. Don't just leave a message on a phone, make sure to speak with someone, so as to avoid any delay in looking for a replacement or switching up the desk schedule.

3. It's really stormy outside! Do I have to come to work?
The university has 2 closure lines, one for students and one for staff. Feel free to call either number. If the university is closed, then the library is closed, and that means a SNOW DAY! Stay home and stay warm. Do some homework. Binge on Netflix.
Sometimes classes are cancelled, but the university remains open. If this is the case, the library is open and we need people to work. BUT, we don't expect anyone to put themselves at risk, trying to get here or get home when the weather is really bad. We try to have snow plans in place, where people that live close by can be called on to fill in for people who might not be able to get in. If you are worried about getting to work, please call and talk to a supervisor. If you're worried about getting stuck on campus, talk to your supervisor. Weather events can hit anytime of the day or night, and we try to be as prepared as we can.
Be reassured that you will not be expected to come in if it's too risky, and you will never be left stranded on campus!
